The map on the left shows sound level contours around the turbine. The contours are based on the turbine at its noisiest which occurs at a wind speed of around 10m/s (22mph).

To put these levels in perspective, “rural night time background” is taken as levels of 20-40 dB(A). The appropriate standard, ETSU-97, requires sound levels below 40 dB(A) in these circumstances. As the map shows, even at its noisiest the Gamlingay turbine meets this standard easily, with sound levels typically less than 30 dB(A) in the village.
